Super super over priced! Like why? A simple chain bread, 2-3 dollars more than normal price. Frozen pizza for $17, overpriced veggies and fruit. Chips overpriced. Not sure why they are still in business. Nothing too special. The prepared meals are nice, but also - again too expensive. If items were super special or unique i would understand, but no. A simple small piece of carrot cake $10, in a basic plastic container. Nope

Welcome! I’ve shopped at all the BiRites in San Francisco. This one is the largest. It’s strong points are the grab & go salads and take home foods as well as heat up complete meals. I also love the housemade baked goods.
The layout hasn’t changed very much from the previous Real Foods market.
I do like BiRite for their community support and 18 Reasons non-profit education space in the Mission.
This indie market is locally owned too.
I wish the prices were a little bit lower, however. But with having a meat and deli counter, BiRite seems to all bases covered except no Ice Cream scoop shop 🙁 as they used to have at their NOPA store. Most sad about that since we need it in the neighborhood.

Huge downgrade from the store that was here previously. No butcher on site and a pathetically small selection of meats. WHERE’S THE BEEF?

If you’re a millennial who doesn’t know how to cook aside from preparing cute charcuterie boards, this site is for you. Chefs and produce connoisseurs, look elsewhere.

When I went into the store, I told the employees I had a service animal and I had three different people tell me that my dog couldn't be in there and was asked to park her outside. I'm not hassled at other grocers over my dog and the options for food have more variety and the prices are less. Your reply to my Yelp review was not very helpful and I'm sorry that your company has such a policy. If you're not aware; you're in a dog friendly city. I don't know any other grocery store that has a problem with it so maybe this store should figure out what the other ones are doing right because people are spending a lot more money at those stores they can bring their dogs into!

And besides the horrible dog policy, this store is so much bigger than the one on 18th St. and offers a small fraction of those wonderful products that the other location has. I was hoping this one in Russian Hill would go above and beyond because the neighborhood would support it, but instead, it is nothing more than an upscale overpriced bodega in my opinion.

I deleted my older review, now that I've had a few months with the store in the neighborhood. Kind of a mixed bag.

Good quality, well-sourced produce and meat, for which one should rightfully expect to pay a premium. Most other grocery items, on the other hand, are ~25% too expensive.

Super friendly customer service, but way too much staff in the store, often outnumbering the customers. Their labor costs must be insane. This possibly has something to do with the high prices.

Beer selection is super weak. Nice little wine section.

Frustrating and inconsistent butchery on some of the cryovaced meat cuts.. they really should have kept a butcher counter in the store like Real Foods.

Overall, nice enough for a high-end little store, but definitely not an everyday grocery store for me. I'll pop in and grab some veggies and a piece of meat when I need it, but most of my shopping is done elsewhere.

I had high hopes, and I feel slightly let down. Oh well.

Vast improvement over previous store at that location BUT be prepared for serious sticker shock. The fish department is a bit sketchy. I took home some fish the other night and it was right on the edge of going bad. (I admit it didn't look great in the case.) The staff at the fish counter seem to be sandwich makers with limited knowledge of fish. They need to up their game.

So happy to have Bi-Rite in the neighborhood! First, they have great produce. They are the only store that carries organic grapes (no, not even Whole Foods has them under Amazon ownership). I also found lemongrass which I would usually have to go to Clement street to get (it is not a Chinese ingredient so no, not in Chinatown). Second, they carry loads of yummy desserts that are great for quick bites - small cakes, puddings in a jar, etc - not to mention their homemade ice creams. Finally, everything they carry is high quality which is reflected in slightly higher prices.

I did see the complaints about the butcher counter. I don’t eat a lot of meat so the meat case and seafood counter work for me but you can go to Little City over the hill if you need a custom cut right away.

For starters, I have lived in the neighborhood for 30+ years and shopped at Real Foods for entire time in business. I am very loyal to shopping local. My experience yesterday at the Bi-Rite at Polk left me extremely disappointed to say the least. I ordered a couple of pieces of trout from the fish counter. The employee proceeded to pick the fish up with his hands ( No Gloves) and place it on the scale, unbelievably unsanitary. It was very busy, and I chose not to confront the employee at the time. Upon reaching the cashier, I told her if she could relay what I experienced on to the store manager. Her response was just as appalling as the employee with no gloves. She told me that it was fine, "our workers wash their hands on a regular basis", then her co-worker chimed in with an "attitude" as to put the poor experience I had was my fault. " Next time you can tell him to wear gloves". Wow, this is taking customer service to a new low. Not even an apology, making me look like a "Karen". I was looking forward not making the walk over to Whole Foods, but that may have to continue.
